New installation on passive node

  • I have a 2 node cluster with only 1 instance running on it in active/passive mode.

Now, my customer wants me to install another instance on the other node and make it active/active for both instance to fail over to each of the nodes.

Instance1 has SQL Server 2005+SP3. Instance 2 is also preferred for the same configuration.

    The OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise-Service Pack1 and it’s a 64-bit operating system

Now, what are the prerequisites required to go ahead with the installation. I believe, a cluster group needs to be created along with storage disks and virtual IP addresses. I would seek from advice in this regard

  • You can either create an application\group or allow the installer to do this for you. You will also need shared disks, an IP address and a unique virtual network name

  • Can I get an official Microsoft link which describes these prerequisites?

    yes, this link provides info.

Installing a 2nd failover instance requires exactly the same process and resources as installing the first, what is it you are unclear on?

    Hi Perry,

Thanks for this piece of advice. I can take it forward from here.
