New Folder Button?

  • Hi There,

I need a "New Folder" button in the Server Console. I'm running a version 8.00.818 of SQL Server. Does anyone know how to do this?

  • I was interesed in the similar task as to how to add fuctionality to Windows Explorer: menu or buttons. I think that it was Steve Jones who recommended Shell Extensions. Let us know if they are useful in customizing EM

  • SQL Server Enterprise Manager is a snap-in under the Microsoft Management Console (MMC). MMC snap-ins have a msc extention. The SQL Server Enterprise Manager snap-in is usually at "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\BINN\SQL Server Enterprise Manager.MSC"

To get started in customizing a console, run explorer to find your EM snap-in, make a backup and then right click the file and pick "author" from the menu.

Then read the help which starts with:

You can use Microsoft Management Console (MMC) to create, save, and open administrative tools (called MMC consoles) that manage the hardware, software, and network components of your Windows system. MMC is a feature of the Windows 2000 operating system, but you can also run MMC on Windows NT, Windows 95, and Windows 98 operating systems. In addition, MMC is a feature of several software applications designed to run on Windows.

MMC does not perform administrative functions, but hosts tools that do. The primary type of tool you can add to a console is called a snap-in. Other items that you can add include ActiveX controls, links to Web pages, folders, taskpad views, and tasks.

There are two general ways that you can use MMC: in user mode, working with existing MMC consoles to administer a system, or in author mode, creating new consoles or modifying existing MMC consoles. For more information about the differences between user and author mode, see Console access options.

  • Hi,

You can you MMC as Carl says if it is not adding a context-aware button or menu item but having Windows Explorer in the same view as EM. See today's topic Enterprise Manager in this Administration forum, I described how to use MMC to append snap-ins and Allen Cui recommended another good approach with Tools - External Tools
