New Cluster installation vs Advanced Cluster preparation

  • I'm studying for the 70-462 exam and in the book it states, to prepare all nodes in the cluster you must run the Advanced Cluster preparation tool on each node.

I ran it on the first node with no problems but running it on the second node it wants to create a brand new cluster installation.

What's the difference between the old "New SQL Failover Cluster installation" option under "Installation", vs the "Advanced Cluster Preparation" option

    under the "Advanced" tab?

This is not an old option, it's perfectly serviceable to deploy a single small clustered instance of SQL Server.

The advanced cluster preparation is more suited for large clustered instance deployment scenarios. Which type of installation are you planning, large or small?

  • Right now I'm just following the exercises in the book but we do have a SQL 2008 R2 two node cluster that I will be upgrading to 2012 soon.
