New 2012 Install and very poor performance.

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2012 - 11.0.2100.60 (X64) Feb 10 2012 19:39:15 Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.2 <X64> (Build 9200: ) (Hypervisor)

A client's IT guy installed SQL 2012 using out of the box defaults. From this I loaded a backup file to create the database. The restore operation took over 44 minutes! Normally this only takes 1-2 minutes. Reports that run in less than 5 seconds now take over a minute. Is this an SQL or hardware problem?

I can do a re-install of SQL if necessary with better parameters if that will help. But I need to give the clients IT guy something to look at and all he really knows is the hardware.

    Any suggestions?

  • Starting at the bottom level...  Check the power management settings - is the VM set to run a balanced power plan (default), or the full-bore high performance plan?  Ditto the hardware on which the VM sits?  This may involve fiddling around with BIOS settings...

After talking with their IT guy, he re-checked the settings and changed the number of cores assigned from 1 to 4. That really sped things up!

He is also going to look at the settings you suggested to see if performance can be boosted a bit more.

Thanks for your suggestions and help!

(Love this forum. The new forum software, not so much!)
