New 2005 Server install - Where are the Client Tools

  • I received the new Visual Studios 2005 Beta2 release.

Comes with three disks, after the VS.net install, I installed SQL Server 2005 Developers edition.

I don't see any client tools to create a DB or add anything.  I did do setups from the configuration manager.

On the SQL2005 disk setup, there is a install of Native SQL Client.  When I went to install it, dialogs said Reinstaling the client and then the install promply failed.  Kept asking to insert a disk.

Did I miss something or is it there and I don't see it?

    Thanks,

    Mike

  • SQL Native Client is not a client tool, it is the new API to work with data in SQL Server 2005 from client tools. Where did you install SQL Server 2005 from? You say that you installed Developer Edition, but I am thinking it might have been Express Edition instead since you mentioned the disks in VS 2005 Beta 2.If it was Express Edition then there are no tools installed by default (I think), but you can download and install Express Manager.

If it was Developer Edition you installed then you should have a menu item called SQL Server Management Studio in the start menu folder. It is the replacement for Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer.

  • Hi Chris,

VS.net did install Express and then I installed the SQL Server 2005 Developers Edition.  So I have 2 instances,Express and a Default MSSQLSERVER.

I just checked and dont see Server Management Studio

I do see SQL Server 2005 CPT | Configuration Tools

    It has

    1. SQL configuration mgr

    2. Surface manager

  • OK, so it seems there were some error when installing the developer edition then. Which version did you install? Was it April CTP, June CTP or other? I know a lot of people have had lots of problems trying to install the bits. Myself I have never run into any, but maybe I've just been lucky. I first installed SQL Server 2005, then Visual Studio 2005 after that, and as I said had no problems. I would suggest you try the dedicated SQL Server Setup & Upgrade forum at Microsoft Technical Forums for an answer.

  • Chris,

OK, I will try at the MS site you mentoned.

    Thanks,

    Mike

  • Did you already have the Visual Studio Beta installed when you tried installing the CTP?  Was it the April CTP?  If so, that specific order causes some the tools to disappear sometimes.  I ended up uninstalling both and installing the CTP first to fix it.

  • Derrick, That April CPT installed after VS must be the culprit.

    Thank you,

    Mike

  • Want to be clear on this.

I have uninstalled the April CTP.

Do I use Add/Remove to uninstall VS. Beta2?

Derrick, I read your link and want to be sure that I should use the April version again.

    Thank you

    Mike

  • Use the Add/Remove.  It works fine.  I just got done doing this (again).    Stupid demos.
