How valuable is an article from a db professional, who, three years after its release, never heard of the built-in function row_number()?

Something I think you'll find here is that even if you don't agree with an author, or you find an article to be somewhat less than helpful to your situation, the discussion surrounding the article typically proves to be useful. The collective experience and willingness to share information here is well worth any read.
That said, Steve et al are encouraging everyone to write articles, as much for their own education as for the group's enlightenment. They will not all be perfect, but if they teach one person something new, even if it's the author, they're worth the time taken to write and read.
