I upgraded my test box from SQL Server 2005 to 2008. It went smoothly. I then launched the "SSIS Package Upgrade Wizard" from SSMS. I pointed it at my SSIS Package store. When it asked me for a "destination" for the upgraded packages, I created a new sub-folder beneath the SSIS Package msdb directory and gave it a new folder. (I thought this would be ok & keep my originals in tact while I was testing.) This may be where I went wrong, but I'm not sure. The upgrade wizard ran fine and I saw able to execute the package from SSMS. I was even able to schedule a job to run the package. All was fine. I then wanted to explore the changes by opening BIDS & creating a new project & attempting to "add an existing" package. When I chose to try to open the package store to show my newly-upgraded folder, I got an error message stating "Could not find stored procedure msdb.dbo.sp_dts_listpackages" followed by "Connect to SSIS Service on machine [machinename] failed: The specified service does not exist as an installed service."
I went into services & confirmed the service was running. I tried to "restart" the service and it won't start! It says "The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion."
THe service is running under the default network service account. I've tried re-booting the server. I'm not sure what may have happened. Can anyone offer some advice?
I read closely the MSDN article about upgrading the packages & thought I'd done everything it said to do: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc280546(v=SQL.100).aspx

Wow...I feel really silly. It turns out I had inadvertently opened BIDS 2005 rather than 2008. I did not realize that it would keep the older version of BIDS. Should I un-install that if I'm planning to have all my packages upgraded to 2008 for production? In any case, I closed BIDS, re-started SSIS, launched BIDS 2008 & was able to successfully "add package" from SQL Server. Sorry for the post!
