Need to know what I should install for my SQL

  • Hi!

I am trying to configure a SQL server for production. it is going to be stand alone server, could you please advise what iso I need to download from Microsoft side if we have bought 2016 Enterprise license. I am confused as I see below options, I am uploading the screen shot hereby,

    Thanks in Advance,

  • It depends on what type of license you bought.
    I'd personally be looking at:
SQL Server 2016 Enterprise Edition with SP1

but it depends on what license you bought as to if you should use Per Core (which is likely) or Per Server/CAL.

If you click on the "Key" link, it should show you if you have a key for it or not.  No key means that is the wrong one.  If they both have keys, then you are probably looking at what YOU personally have access to (ie MSDN and likely both are then licensed under MSDN and not on the 2016 Enterprise license you purchased) then I'd be looking at your invoice as that should state if you bought Per Core or Per Server/CAL.

Chances are it is Per Core as I believe that is cheaper in most cases, but that is still a pretty large bill.  Are you sure you need the Enterprise edition features?  I know it is a little late now as it has already been purchased, but come renewal time, you may be able to save some $$$'s.

The above is all just my opinion on what you should do.
As with all advice you find on a random internet forum - you shouldn't blindly follow it.  Always test on a test server to see if there is negative side effects before making changes to live!
I recommend you NEVER run "random code" you found online on any system you care about UNLESS you understand and can verify the code OR you don't care if the code trashes your system.

  • That to me sounds like you are running a on the per core license model, although I am confused about the "2 CALS" part.  That to me sounds like the CAL license not a per core license.

I would contact the software vendor and find out what you bought for certain.  How many cores does the machine you are installing it on have?  And did you buy enough licenses for that number of cores?

Are you running this on a physical machine or a VM?

The above is all just my opinion on what you should do.

  • Virtual Machine please

    Virtual Machine please

That is the most expensive route if memory serves.  If I remember correctly, you need to buy licenses for the maximum number of cores the host machine has, not the number of cores the VM will be presented.
That is, if your VM host has 128 cores, and your VM has 8, you need to be licensed for 128 cores.

If this is what you planned for and purchased, then you should be fine.  But if not, I would attempt to get a refund and then evaluate what you need and purchase accordingly.

Just my 2 cents though.  Also, are you 100% sure you need enterprise?  the price difference between enterprise and standard is quite drastic.

The above is all just my opinion on what you should do.

Just a quick comment, in 2016, at least, you only need to buy for the amount of cores your VM has. If your Host has 128 cores, but the VM will only have 8 cores, then you only need to licence for 8. If the VM has 2 cores, you need to buy 4 (as you cannot buy less than 4). Have a look at P 15 onwards on the licensing guide.

This does make me think the OP has bought 2 CALS, as you can't buy 2 Cores (you have to buy a minimum of 4, as I said above). But only 2 CALS, really?
