I've inherited a server with several databases, one which has 7 NDF files. The initial size for most of the NDF files are 500 MB, with one of them having an initial size of 104G! I cannot shrink the database or file to recover the space that this .NDF using, and it's up to 55G.
So my question is this, can I change the INITIAL SIZE in SSMS for that NDF data file without taking the DB down and losing data? How can I get that NDF to move data out into the other NDF files? Perhaps I need to increase all the NDF fileS initial growth size to something more manageable?

I have to ask. Why do you need to reduce the size of this file? If it is using 55GB and growing, eventually you will need the space it has reserved and there won't be any autogrowth events that cause a performance hit.
