Need a good Internet Mail Server

  • Try http://www.mailenable.com. The basic version is free and uses minimal resources.

  • Upgrade to Windows Server 2003 on the SQL server box. It has not only SMTP, but also POP services built right into it. It's that easy to configure, even my wife can do it! I know this is more money, but with the extra facilities it offers, it's worth considering.

  • Hummm.......Wonder if I can sell the Windows Server 2003 option?.........Don't know.......

  • Ok next week I'm planning on sitting down and reviewing each of these mail servers recommended. Not that I want to review any more, but if there are others out there people are using successfully please let me know. I'd like to make the best decision possible, and the more options the better chances are the better they will be.

Also looking to develop a good set of requirements as a yardstick to measure all of these. Here is a list of my requirements I came up with only 5 minutes of thought. Can't be complete. What other requirements should I be considering?

    Requirements:

    - Provide POP3 and SMTP servers

    - Provide a way to relay mail

    - Provide a way to secure SMTP server so only SQL Server can send mail.

    - Provides a way to block all incoming mail???

    - Has good documentation

    - Has technical support

    - Vendor has been around for a while and will be expected to be around for the next 100 years, or at least as long as we use the software.

    - Doesn't cost an arm and a leg

    - Runs on NT4 and Windows 2000, 2003

    - Works with SQL Mail and SQL Agent Mail

    - Easy to configure and manage

    - Works with SQL Server 7.0, and 2000

    - Will work with Yukon (might be hard to verify this one).

  • Has anybody tried getting MSSQL to send SMTP mail's directly? I would like to aviod Outlook if possible. I know this is a relatively old post, Hope people are watchin.

  • I am looking for something to block the SMTP junk mail through MS Exchange. Any idea?

    Thanks.

  • I use a stored procedure to kick off Cdosys mail. It is SMTP only - no receive. Its very simple and requires no client on the server. The only thing I haven't figured out is how to send attachments.

I have also used ArgoSofts email server with great success, very easy, very cheap, can relay and can have trusted ips to accept relay from. http://www.argosoft.com/
