Named instances & processors

  • Just a quicky, something I have been told that seems to contradict Microsoft's per-processor licensing, if it is true.

"Each named instance of SQL Server installed on a server needs its own processor"

Apparently, it's on page 12 of the 2072A course materials, which I don't have access to.

    True, or a misinterpretation/mistake?

  • Seems to be true for Standart Edition:

    "Licensing for a Multi-Instance Configuration

.................... SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition Processor Licenses and Server Licenses allow you to install multiple instances of SQL Server on the same computer without requiring additional licenses. SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition supports multiple instances, but you must have a separate license for each instance"

    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/sql/2000/all/reskit/en-us/part2/c0461.mspx

  • Aha, so it's a licensing issue and not a technical one (i.e. with Standard Edition you can install up to 16 instances with one processor but you'd need 16 licences).  That would explain it, cheers!

  • Check that with MS directly.

It was true, but I seem to remember something recently, maybe it's just a foggy memory but, that they dropped that requirement for Std.

  • do what the rest of us do ... buy a couple of per-processor licenses and then pray ur covered!? SQL Server licensing documentation is harder to read than the Bible ... the Ancient Aramaic version, that is!?

  • According to the EULA, there's no difference.  "You may install and run any number of copies of the Server Software on a single Server."

As you suggested, I phoned them, and they repeated this same line to me.

So as far as I'm concerned, I'm covered!
