N+1 clustering?

    We are getting ready to purchase some new hardware for production clustered servers, and our network folks are pushing hard for an N+1 cluster (versus several active/passive clusters).  Is anyone out there using N+1 clusters in a 24x7 environment?  I'd be interested in hearing your comments.

    We use a three physical node cluster for a two virtual node exchange cluster. Minimum for Exchange is N+1. SQL Server, however, has no such limitation. We have 1 active/passive cluster SQL cluster (N+1), but we have predominantly active/active (N) clusters. For us, active/active clusters are the most cost-effective.
