Mysterious "Database Backup Plan" Failure

  I setup a sql 2005 Maintenance plan to backup all our databses. It has worked fine for a month but  last night it failed. I checked... the disk had plenty of space...there was nothing exceptional in the Windows App\System event log ... the MSSQL.1 LOG folder showed the backups went fine (no errors of any kind). I checked the folder containing the backups and  they appeared to be present. I checked the job "History" under SSMS and it simply stated that "The package execution failed". I'm out of ideas. What else can I check to look for the source of the failure?
