I have 5 instances of SQL Server 2005 SE on an 8 CPU server (Windows Server 2003). The processor affinity mask is set to automatic for all instances.
Is each instance "locked" in to the 1st 4 CPUs?
Is there any point in having more than a 4 CPU server when using SE?
Is SQL Server/OS smart enough to distribute the instance workload amongst the 8 CPUs even though each instance can only use a maximum of 4 CPUs?
I apologise for asking the same question 3 different ways. 🙂

Standard Edition will support 4 physical CPU sockets, regardless of the number of cores in each CPU.
Do you have 8 sockets, or 8 cores?
