MSSQL Express ODBC Links

  • Hi

I am reasonably new to SQL, but am very interested in using MSSQL Express for our EPOS Solution.  I have managed to upload the database and everything works fine on a local machine, but when I come to create an ODBC link on a second computer it says that the server does not exist or the login details are incorrect.  All the details are the same as I used on the computer holding the database.

I have tried using a copy of SQL2000 Standard Edition and what I’m doing works fine.

Has any one got any Ideas??

    Cheers

  • Could be one of a million things.

My first guess with this level of information is that you are not defining the ODBC link with the default instance name e.g. machinename\SQLEXPRESS

  • Hi

Unfortunately not that easy.  It does work on the local machine on which I am using the instance name, but when I use exactly the same settings on a remote machine it says the connection failed and that the database does not exist or access is denied.

Its almost like there is a setting not allowing remote connections, but I cant find it anywhere.

    Cheers

  • Yes, you are correct, by default you cannot connect remotely to sql server 2005. A quick google will find the steps required, my search turned up:

I havent read it but if thats rubbish, have a look yaself, good luck!
