MSDTC and Component Services on Win2003 SP1 and SP2

  • Hey All , maybe you can help me, or maybe this has been covered before . I am currently working on a few cluster servers ,one is Win2003 with no SP and the other two are Win2003 SP1 and SP2 . The problem I am having is with the dreaded MSDTC in a cluster.

With the Win2003 box with no service pack I have created the msdtc installed Network DTC and thats worked fine. Now with the service packed boxes there is an additional step which is ,after installing network DTC to configure MSDTC in Component services the problem I am having is with these boxes when I go into component services , com+ is not enabled , so I right click my computer , properties then click enable on this computer . When I apply that setting it just crashes out. After looking at the event logs it appears that Component services is trying to start the DTC service but the service wont start on the cluster becuase it needs configuring in Component Services, bit of a catch 22 situation.

The only way I have got it to work and it's not pretty , is to evict the passive node uninstall/reinstall the msdtc service , reboot then I can enable component services on the box no probs, After which I put the node back in the cluster , but it's very unstable .

Does anybody know if there is a known issue with getting component services running on a service packed windows 2003 cluster?

Any help would be would appreciated

  • Not sure about using it with clusters, but one of our applications was developed using Com+. When migrating from Server 2000 to 2003 we found there were a number of security changes that MS made which caused us a decent amount of heartache. I beleive there were event additional changes made between RTM and SP1 or SP2. Here's a link to some of the changes they made in Com + 1.5... Hopefully that gets you pointed in the right direction.

Any specific error messages being logged in the application or system event logs?
