MSDE suddenly stops

  • Hello all,

I have an installation of MSDE sp3 on server3000 sp1.

The MSDE seems to be ok but randomly during the day

I find it down and the last messages that I find in the event

    wiewer are:

    8128 :

Using 'xpsqlbot.dll' version '2000.80.760' to execute extended stored procedure 'xp_qv'.

    and

    17148 :

SQL Server is terminating due to 'stop' request from Service Control Manager.

I've already reinstalled MSDE two times but nothing has changed.

    Anybody can help me ?

  • This message is usually due to someone stopping the service manually.  Are you the only one with access to it?  Or are you using any third party backup tools on this box that may be stopping the service?

Also, make sure that file and print sharing are enabled on your device as MSDE needs them in order to run.  Other than that, it might possibly be a bad OS install.  Did you encounter any problems or error messages when MSDE was installed?  Hope this helps.

  • Hi, thanks a lot for your reply.

I am 99% sure to be the only one to have access to the server, anyway I can try to change the administrative passwords to be sure that nobody else can manage the server. I've installed MSDE without encountering problems of any kind. Do you think it could be possible to use the profiler for keeping the trace of who is calling the procedure ?

    Regards, Mauro

  • You can try Profiler, but I don't know that it's going to record a service stop request (I haven't tried it) as it will probably stop recording at the same time as the service  stops.  The other issue with Profiler is that it does have some performance overhead, so you may not want to leave it running on a production system for hours at a time.  I Googled this error message some but really didn't find too much.  One person fixed their MSDE problem by updating MDAC components and another re-did their Operating System install.

What about the server event logs?  Is there anything in there happening at the same time as the shut downs?

You didn't list your service pack level for SQL Server but I'll assume it's 3 or 3a.  There is a cumulative Hot Fix Update for SQL Server 2000 SP3 and 3a here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810185/  You could try installing that and see if it helps.  I believe there are a lot of fixes related to Win 2003 included in thiat release.  Hope this helps.

  • Did this get resolved. I am running into the same error myself.
