I have so much problem trying to patch my MSDE SP3 to SP4 for an existing default SQL MSDE instance.
First I ran the SP4 file and I get "the instance name specified is not vaild" problem.... after I search around the web, I found many people resolve the problem by running it from the command line prompt with
setup /upgradesp sql run ... command.
I have tried so many different combinations of the above command and the installation keep failing.... The funniest part was that According to the Readme file, it said search for the string “value 3” in the error log. Within 10 lines of the string is a failure notice for a custom action. The notice contains additional information about the nature of the failure.
Okay... so here is the log file... what's wrong with it?? anyone can help?
thanks!

I can't help much, but I ended up calling Microsoft in a similar situation. They gave me two commands, the second one worked, and the tech also thought case mattered. Also, if the server is using mixed mode, temporarily make the sa password stronger before upgrading, if applicable (i.e. it is blank or a simple word).
Also below is a link for common MSDE upgrade problems.
setup /upgradesp sqlrun instancename=servername /L*v c:\msde.log
setup UPGRADE=1 SECURITYMODE=SQL UPGRADEUSER=SA UPGRADEPWD=strongSApassword /L*v c:\msde.log

Hi there,
I had the exact same problem. I tried the second command line and it worked like a charm!
Thanks a million!
