I encountered an error during the installation of SP4 on MSDE v1, saying that "Execution cannot continue as the language dependent resource file c:\mssql7\binn\resources\1033\sfc.rll could not be loaded." After I clicked okay, installation seemed to continue and returned no problem, then I check the version and it indicated sp4 applied (7.00.1063). After a reboot, I copied the file sfc.rll, reinstalled sp4 before another file (semcomn.rll) reported an identical error "...could not be loaded". At this point, I decided I copied whatever missing from other sql-server (sp4 applied) to the destination folder and reinstalled sp4 again. This time, no problem. My question, am I safe to assume I have successfully installed SP4 ? Any tests (other than select @@version) to indicate the success ? Any other things to watch out ?? Thanks in advance.

No gotchas I am aware of but as for places else to look open EM drill to the server in Question and open Server properties. But you might also drill in Explorer to the folder when the binaries are for SQL and look at the properties of the file isqlw.exe.

Thanks for your reply, Antares686, but what exactly am I checking in both EM and Explorer ? Could you kindly elaborate ? Thanks.

Sorry in Enterprise Manager drill to the server you question, right click the server properties and look at Product Version this should match the @@version response you get but is for the server. If you want to verify the client drill in Windows Explorer to the location of the SQL binaries on my machine is
C:\MSSQL7\Binn
And look at the file properties of sqlgui.dll on the version tab. The file version (on mine) shows 1998.11.13.0 on an SP1 or SP2 install (I forget it is client tools only) and 2000.10.24.0 on the SP4 boxes.

Thanks a lot. Antares686. It matches on both areas. I DO appreciate your assistance on that. At this point, I think I am doing okay with the SP4 installation.

Mystery ! I tried to install SP4 on the prod box, I noticed that there were some files missing after installation. They were Isql.exe, semcomn.dll, semrepl.dll, sfc.dll, sqlgui.dll, sqlns.dll, and sqlsetup.GID (h). Anyway, select @@version says it is 7.00.1063. Am I still missing something ? I mean, I was looking for some install files but found some that did not seem to indicate much. Any ideas ? Thanks in advance...
