MSDB Deadlock = Server crawl?

"MSDB database MDF is 13.5 GB" suggests it may need some attention. backup history, job history and database mail logs are common sources of msdb bloat.

General question. Is there a recommended amount of time for keeping these? 6 months? 1 year? etc?

Nothing official that I know of.

For job history SQL Agent by default bases retention upon the number of history rows...which is why I turn that off and manage it by time using the purge proc. I keep 2 weeks of regular job history, and then any job that runs more often than once every 2 minutes (specific to one particular environment I worked in) I only keep 2 days worth.

I keep 60 days of backup history, and run my job once per week on low util times.
