Hopefully someone can help point me in the right direction with this one, as my Google-Fu appears to be failing me this afternoon, but is there any best practice as far as placement of the different roles within SQL?
Here is my situation: I am setting up a SQL environment for reporting purposes, so I have SQL, SSRS, SSIS, and SSAS to deal with. The original plan was 2x SQL database servers, and install https://nox.tips/ RS, AS, and IS on a 3rd server with the RSDB is in the SQL cluster.
Today, our DBAs approached me about moving only SSRS to the clustered servers, for network performance reasons. They understand that with SQL Standard it is not cluster aware, and they would need to maintain two separate SSRS environments. The servers are all VMs in a single chassis with a 10Gb backplane connecting each of the hosts, so I do not see any issue with network connectivity between the machines.

They understand wrong. Standard edition is most definitely cluster aware. You are limited to 2 nodes with standard.
How much traffic is generated by this system? I think I would have all of the DB's on one server/cluster, and install the SSRS server in a scale out on 2 "web" servers. If you go that route, make sure that you allocate enough memory for SSAS and SSIS
Why 2012? That's end of life in July 2022.

If you assassinate a DBA, would you pull a trigger?
