I've worked at some larger organizations in the past that had teams of SQL Developers who wrote in house hardening and auditing tools. However, if your in a smaller organization that is housing sensitive data, what are the leading tools that would be helpful in this area for SQL Server?

Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 R2 Best Practices Analyzer is a good place to start.

Monitoring Best Practices by Using Policy-Based Management has a bunch of useful checks as well. PBM is a great way for small orgs to get on top of their environment.

SQL Server 2008 R2 Security Best Practice Whitepaper has a lot of good recommendations as well.

There are no special teachers of virtue, because virtue is taught by the whole community.

You may also want to check out Securing SQL Server by Denny Cherry[/url]. There's a new edition coming out soon with SQL 2012 and a bunch of other new content if you can afford to wait and use other resources for the time being.
