Is this problem sorted? I haven't heard for a couple of days and I'm curious as to why this problem happened.

Hi,
No I was unable to restore the master db succesfully. So I`ve had to restore indidivual User db's manually, then sync\recreate logins, tasks, dts, catalogs and backup devices all manually.
I too can`t explain why after restoring the Master db I lose connectivity and unable to restart the SQL services. However, I very much appreciate your input that you gave. Thanks again, Steve

No problem. At least next time (and there is always a next time) you will be prepared and know what does and doesn't work.

Something that just crossed my mind... What login is used for the sql server service account on the source server?? After restoring master to destination maybe it is failing because the login was local to the source server only. i.e historically was builtin removed from master and the service login manually added? Did you ever check the Windows event logs for this sort of error?
