Antares, is this what you use? This is what our dba uses as well and every once in a while the CPU peaks between 85 and 95% and so the developers get asked the famous question of what changed today from yesterday. Sometimes the dba can pinpoint where the blocking is occurring but a lot of times those procedures haven't been touched in months. We usually just brush it off because everything looks optimal and why change something that has been working for so long and we have already tested every which way to run at its best performance.
Does anyone have any advice or any other tools that we could look into? The idea of a SQL monitoring tool that uses SQL as it's backend, doesn't really make much sense to me.

Actually I won a copy and gave it to another group. I don't use anything to constantly monitor as I have foudn the extra loads unacceptable. I have been testing MS MOM but still leary. Just monitor when an issue occurrs that I need to research and I use Profiler and PerfMon mostly.

I've worked with MS perf guys and they mainly use Permon and Profiler as well. I've found these to be the best for spot troubleshooting. At work we use Patrol (BMC) for ongoing monitoring which is useful for looking back at yesterday or last week if you need it.
