Monitoring SQL 2008 Log shipping configuration

  • Hi,

I've been trying to get SCOM 2007 R2 to pick up a log shipping configuration I'm running. The SQL Server MP has bene installed and the two servers are recognized by SCOM as SQL Server instance hosts. Still, I can't see any hint that SCOM would've discovered the log shipping config.

Only caveat: I have no monitor server (didn't have a separate SQL 2008 instance I could use at the time, I will add one when rebuilding the log shipping configuration after the quarterly failover test.

Does anyone have an idea how this works ? I can't find anything really useful on the MS sites...

Thans in advance for any feedback !

  • Update:

Apparetntly there's the 'source log shipping server' and 'destination log shipping server' monitor in the SQL Server MP for SCOM.

Still there seems to be no way to check whether this monitor is applied or not and based on which requirements they are activated.

Anyone have any experience with this ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated !

  • we decided against scom as it didn't monitor everything we wanted from SQL

is there a reason it needs to be in scom? Could you nit create a custom stored proc which checks the log shipping tables and raises the alerts and emails them on?

what exactly is it you wish to monitor in LS, failures, alerts, etc?

  • as an add on to this, yesterdays headline was about adding a monitor to an existing LS plan, so you could add one now without waiting for the failover

  • @ Anthony: Our SCOM instance is plugged in to ANGate, that on its turn generates alerts an a ticketing system.

@ Perry: For now, it would suffice to simply receive alerts when LS is out of synch. Other possible issues are monitored by the db engine MP or the windows server MP.

The problem is I can't test it by manually lagging the log shipping because this is a production system, and the client doesn't like it when i start fiddling around...
