Community-minded technical experts required for new site dedicated to Microsoft BI/DW professionals (www.SQLobSERVER.com).
If you enjoy helping others and sharing your knowledge, drop me a line

Hmmm ... don't know if I'd want to support a community that doesn't use the technology ...

Thanks for your post, Phill.
You raise a great point, one that we debated over for weeks before proceeding (as as a consequence of your reply, I have made the relevant disclosures on the site now).
The unfortunate choice of forum platform was one dictated by an opportunity for free webhosting and development which we could not turn down. This no-strings arrangement (our benefactor receives no endorsement from us, is not in the BI/DW space, and does not participate in the forum in any capacity) meant that we could offer a free site on a long-term sustainable basis.
The clincher is that our team are really BI/DW geeks and have minimal web development skills, experience or time (most have full-time jobs and kids).
We just wanted a small alternative forum targetting Microsoft BI/DW users so FAQs were easier to find and have a BI/DW perspective. For what it's worth we are all Microsoft-certified and all promote and effective use of SQL Server.
Anyway, thank you for taking the time to visit our site (I've done the same with yours and think it's a fantastic portal) and respect your concerns.
Hopefully, in the future we can procure a solution more in line with our goals.
Kind regards,
Jon

Hi,
Long time forum guest, first time post.
I am an MCSE, MCDBA, and MCAD but I also hold certification from SAS, Sun and Oracle.
I work for a company that uses SQLServer but also has Sybase and DB2.
When I surf, I use IE but have an installation of Opera on the home PC.
I had a look at the site, it's good. Different board stucture. Won't suit everyone but might be real handy if you work in that area.
Not sure if the technology thing is really an issue perhaps phillcart's own forum might give an insight into the background of his reply. A little competition is a good thing I think.
True solutions are what works best for the customer over the long term, not what shoes you buy.

Jon "...done the same with yours..." & podatum "...perhaps phillcart's own forum..."
If you're referring to http://www.sqlserver.org.au as my forum/portal then you're mistaken. Australian SQL Server User Groups is a general resource for all things related to SQL Server in the land down under. While I am involved with running it, and also involved with my local SQL Server user group, the portal/forum is not mine by any stretch of the imagination. I'm only one of 1500+ users in our fledgling community.
"Not sure if the technology thing is really an issue "
As a visitor to a forum/site that advertises itself as "the Microsoft BI/DW community portal" I would expect the people behind the website to be using the Microsoft BI/DW products. That would be like me saying Reporting Services is a good tool, but I'll give you a pair of Nike's instead
If it's not about the technology, then why promote yourself as something that's technology specific?
Jon, understand how you have to take these opportunities sometimes, personally I would have found an opportunity that allowed me to run what I was promoting. As a portal to a wider community, you'd be surprised what you can get when you ask. A lot of people want to get there products and services in front of people. You only need to take a look at the advertising thats presented here at SQLServerCentral.com

two thoughts... (which is two more than I normally have)
1. A forum isn't really a BI or DW project or system, it's an oltp (of sorts), so does it overly matter re:mysql. The php side I think is really inconsequential.
2. maybe they could make the cut across to the snitz forums by the 12th? It's what used to be in use here, and there are definitely days when I miss some of it's features.
3. (almost a bonus thought really ) if hosting is an issue, i'd be happy to talk re: helping out on hosting, there are many v.inexpensive sites that will host asp/asp.net/almost anything for relatively small amounts.

Thanks for the feedback guys. As this has evolved (and my subsequent chats with a few of the stalwarts of SSC) I think we will focus on how SS integrates with other BI/DW technologies. This way we minimise the number of toes we tread on as well as accomplish our objective of providing a complementary meeting point for SS BI/DW professionals.
The reality is, despite the great end-to-end integration story of SS, that SS is deployed with other apps from both an ETL as well as a BI perspective.
Having surfed around since my initial post I don't find too many SS sites that have boards dedicated to other vendors and how they integrate with SS.
Anyway, we would welcome anyone who would care to play a part in our little complementary forum.
Thanks!
