Good question. While I haven't had the need to work with spatial data types in SQL Server, years ago I had to measure distance across the surface of the earth. I ended up translating the Haversine formula from math to PL/SQL. It was a very interesting project and I learned a lot. Years later, Google maps exposed it's routing API, which would have been interesting as well, had I gotten to work on it.

I learned something new today! I had no idea such data types existed.

Thanks for this interesting question about a topic that I have not used since 4 years after I attended a session about geometry/geography at SQL Server Days.
