Model does not open in Report Manager

  • I created a model using SSRS 2008 uploaded the model in report manager and only the properties appear and the Model does not open run. If I choose load in report builder-report builder 2008 R2 opens a new report with no models. Please let me know if any additional clarification is needed in resolving this - I got it to excecute once locally but now it only gives the properties of the model like as above

    thank you

After researching I found this entry - could this be the reason?

Remember that everything from now on is meant to be experienced by the users. You must have the .NET Framework 2.0 redistributable installed on your machine before you can run this.

A report model cannot be opened/executed in Report Manager. It is only a meta-data layer that you create to "hide" the underlying table structures and dependancies.

Report models are meant to be used by end-users in Report Builder as a data source, to enable them to create reports by dragging and dropping fields and not worry about joining tables etc.

    Hope this makes sense...

    Martin.

  • Yes it makes complete since -what i left out is that once I open report builder in report manager locally -the available tables from the model appear in the report builder -when done locally

When accessing report manager on the server -than opening report builder as I did locally Report Builder opens a blank report and is not associating the tables in the model as it did locally.

Did you upload the Model to the SSRS instance on your local machine, or to the SSRS instance on the server?

  • on a 2008 server that may not have all of the SSRS components installed

What if you click on "Open from Report Server"? Do you see the model then?

I'm still a little confused about your comment of server vs. local machine. Are you sure you've uploaded the Report Model to the server's SSRS instance?

  • What I mean when I state that locally all is ok is that I have my local PC configured to run as a server.

when I log onto the server that I uploaded the same model to connected it to the same datasource -open report builder and the model tables do not populate/made available only a blank report loads

Without being there and seeing exactly what you are seeing it is very difficult to know exactly what the issue is. My guess is that it has something to do with either a datasource (maybe pointing to the wrong server/database) or with what server/report model you are connecting to in Report Builder.

Wish I could be more specific, but the best advice I can give you at this point is to check your data sources and what you are connecting to (model and server) through Report Builder.

  • thankyou I will check

  • I believe I can explain myself a bit clearer. With my local server configuration on my PC I can start report builder 1.0 and the GETTING STARTED) Select a site or server (local pc/Report Server) appears as the default and under that For Select a source of data for you report. THE MODEl or MODELS appear a selection for you to choose. After selecting a model (just by double clicking on it) all is well and the model is ready to use.

When connecting to a remote SSRS 2008 R2 server and uploading the models data sources making the connections to the data sources -following the same steps -when opening report builder within Report Manager the getting started wizard is very different it does not initially bring you to a "Select data source" option - I am trying to make this as simple as possible for the customer - having the customer go through a bunch of menu options is not good - I prefer they just double clink once from a list of MODELS. Thank you again

  • When I select Load in report builder from the manager no dataset selections appear. It appears that you have to go add one.

Is there any way to configure a default function so when ever you start report builder within the manager it acts like report builder 1.0 and the first and only thing the customer needs to do is to double click on a Model and the datasets report builder opens with the tables ready to be used and the fields ready to be dragged and dropped?

Have a look at the following article...I think it will answer your question: http://www.sqlservercentral.com/blogs/sqldownsouth/archive/2011/05/19/report-builder_3A00_--change-report-server-connection.aspx

  • I appreciate the link - however, I am connected to the server and even the data source populates on the left. But in report builder 1.0 you just click on the datasources you want and the Entities and fields appears -ready to be used for a ad-hoc report. In report builder 3.0 when I click on the data source (which is now MS placed on the left)

just the properties appear. Nothing appears under the datasets. There are no entities or fields to select from and drag and drop into the report.

The customer should not have to configure the report - in 1.0 it was just a click on the data source -is there a way to produce the same ease of use for the customer? Any further assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately not as far as I know mate.
