mmc.exe application Err..same tricky problem which I already raised

  • I got the same tricky problem which I already raised in http://www.sqlservercentral.com/forums/shwmessage.aspx?forumid=5&messageid=238772   ..That time somehow I managed to changed that file name old_mmc.exe.20051123-034752-00.mdmp .

But now again same issue raised. Here I observed one thing when I delete that file from

    C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\ErrorRep\UserDumps\

And when I tried to open EM==tables==all rows then I got same error as before and this time that same file generated

    mmc.exe.20051129-083832-00.hdmp…size 1,202KB…type HDMP file..Attributes AC

    along with other file

    mmc.exe.20051129-083832-00.mdmp..size 137KB…type Crash Dump File…Attribute AC

That goes on generating whenever I tried to open EM=tables=all rows…

I kindly need your help..I have windows server 2003  Enterprise Edition and Microsoft SQL Server  2000 - 8.00.878 (Intel X86)..

If this problem is regarding service pack then please guide me which service pack should I upgrade and steps require to do that….I already have service pack3..how I will upgrade it.. Rest of the things regarding EM is working here fine…

    Please help me out…

  • Have you tried just reinstalling EM yet ?

  • Hey!!

I dnot how but it is working now fine...I just added new SQL-SERVER to my server group and its EM I opened then tables and then all rows..it opened as usual and then I opened my DB..Tables..All Rows..it is working fine!! I checked C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\ErrorRep\UserDumps\ folder but there is nothing..no files ....I donot know how....I dont understand this behavior  of EM....I certainly not sure it will work fine for sometimes onwards....may be again it will raise this issue....

What you think rudy....And one more thing if I forced to install my service pack3 then will i get it from MSDN\support\download ??? and if I get that then I simply overwrite my old pack3 or I uninstall old and then again I install new pack3..or upgrade my pack  with PACK3a.....If same thing will again happenes then shall it work fine when I reinstall my EM.....

  • Things are 'flaky' <period> and I do not know what to say. My actions would be to uninstall all of the client tools and reinstall them. Then apply SP3 (actually SP3a). In you case the option is yours to do that or just reapply SP3a. Good Luck !

  • Papillon and Rudy,

    1. There may be a virus similar to described in

    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/toolsquit.htm

"Why does Task Manager, MSCONFIG, or REGEDIT disappear while opening?"

This virus also affects MMC, I had the case like this on a workstation, then Norton was re-installed and it took care of the virus (probably) and mmc is working again

    2. SP3 or SP4 are needed for Enterprise Manager because of Cross-Database Ownership Chaining checkbox that appears in EM only if SP3 or SP4 is applied. I had cases when application support did not have this checkbox because SP3 was not applied to the EM, but was applied to the server (on another server). In one example the app broke because of the ownership problems (it happened when SP3 just was released) and the vendor told the app support to !!!give guest read/write permissions for Masters tables!!! Thanksfully he told me that "advice" right away, so we installed SP3 to his EM and just checked this checkbox for his server.
