Missing SQL Server 2014 "Best Practices" *.xml Files for Policy Based Management

  • I am new to Policy Based Management, and I have seen several online references (for example, https://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic890216-146-1.aspx) that indicate that that there should be some "Best Practices" *.xml files located at a disk location similar to:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\120\Tools\Policies\DatabaseEngine\1033
However, I cannot find those files on any of our SQL 2014 boxes.

Did we miss a checkbox when we installed SQL Server? I don't see the files in the SQL Server install kit either.

Where can we find the files?

That's odd...I see them on mine in that directory. Try searching any of the possible install drives for one of the files. Search for: Backup and Data File Location.xml
Maybe another thing to try is right click on the policies node, select import policies and click on the ellipsis/three dots and see if it opens to the directory location.

  • Hmmm....

It must be our "specialized" DoD install kit. I found the files just fine on SQL Server 2016 [sic] on my microsoft.com downloaded copy of the install kit.

    Thanks for taking a look.
