Hi Folks,
When using SQL configuration manager in SQL 2005, none of the SQL 2005 Services are listed other than integration services. You may ask why not use services.msc. Our developer wishes to setup startup parameters for the agent stratup which you can in the configuration manager.
Any ideas?

Hi Luke,
All the relevant services are listed in the services console, i.e sqlserver(MSSQLSERVER), sql agent, etc.
It's definately a full blown install of SQL 2005 as i have connected to the server using management studio and sucessfully restarted the services in the service console.

It is almost as if the WMI isnt reporting back to the configuration manager rest of the services.

I've tried a restart of the server previously to no avail, I've just tried manually restarting the WMI service a few minutes ago with same results.

what about permissions, does the account you are logging in with (and connecting to Config Mgr with) have admin right to the Server to stop and start windows services?
this is all sounding somewhat familiar. Like perhaps what I went through installing Dev Ed on my Vista machine... You need to specify that you want to launch it with admin rights in order to start/stop services etc... That way the UAC popup will greet you when you first launch SSMS, SSCM, Visual Studio etc, but once you click ok to that you keep the elevated rights until you close the app.

Hi Luke,
I'm logging onto the server directly using domain admin on 2003 server. I came across a few blogs that suggest a bad install or service pack may be a cause. Forutuantely the server is not heavily used and only contain 2 small databases. I am completely uninstalling SQl after detaching the databases and perfrom a reinstall with full installation and no service pack. I will let you know the outcome shortly.

Looks like the re-install has done the trick, all services listed in configuration manager. Althought I havent yet applied any service pack, I;ll leave the service packs until further testing on a non production server.

Hi,
After the re-install last night the services were listed at expect in SQL configuration manager, however when i came in this morning they were gone, this ones had me baffled as nothing on the server has been changed since last night.

did you install any of the Service Packs as you hadn't yesterday. Is the server set to automatic updates and it perhaps installed them and rebooted over night?
Are you logging in with the same user as yesterday?
Are you certain that account didn't somehow get locked once you'd already logged in?

Hi Luke,
I've kind of figured out the problem, One thing that came to mind was group policy as it seems after re-install the services appeared in configarion manager only to later disappear which could mean any sql related policy may have not been present after re-install of SQL. We have a server OU in which this server resides. I managed to get the test machine working which wasnt in the servers ou, as soon as i moved it into the servers ou the problem oocured. As soon as it was moved back out of the servers ou the services appeared again. Now to work out what is causing it? The only diference I can see is the log on local policy is set, could this be a cause?

You should be able to use the Resultant Set of Policies function on both machines to find the differences. The log on locally policy may be causing issues if it is set to not allow the services to interact with the desktop but I'd doubt it. Although stranger things have happened. Either way the RSOP should be able to tell you not just what policies are different but what the end result of all of the policies being applied and what settings are different from one machine to another.

Hi Robert,
We were trying to setup some SQL startup parameters for the SQL service, hence the needs to get SQL configuration Manager to see the Services for SQL. We discovered it was something in a group policy that was applied to the server that was causing the problem. As soon as we moved the server to an temp OU in the AD with no policies applied other than the default domain policy the services were visibile in the configuration manager. To get to this stage I contacted Microsoft who sugested creating a Test OU with the same policies and to undo the policies applied one by one until we get the result desired to pinpont the policy causing the problem.
Because this paremeter was a one off and the server in question was a live server, we never bothered finding out the root cause as its not needed often enough. Microsoft however showed me where to set the paremeter withing the registry.
If it is the same your are trying to do, let me know and I can post the registry details you need to amend at your own risk (this is the -g ### parameter).
If you have the luxury of a non live server and the configuration manager is an absolute then the only suggestion is to pinpoint the policy through process of elimination.
