Can you confirm you are not using SQLServer Express Edition ?
and / or post the @@version of your sql instance ?

Just do a search on the data file name in the SQL box and if it's not there in the box, then you have no other option.. go for a restore from backup.
Strange that you could not find any info in the error log or the default trace.. Did your SQL Service restarted? Anyone deleted the entry from the old errorlog file after restart 🙂 ?
