Hi All,
Can DB mirroring be setup between SQL Server 2008 Enterprise and SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition?
We are migrating to another H/W and also upgrading to 2008 R2, So i was going with DB mirroring, Can somebody say if this is the right approach?
If not what is the right approach? the DB is around 300 GB.
Thanks

No. That setup is supported only during an upgrade and only with 2008 as the principal and 2008 R2 as the mirror (the other way around will not work at all, databases cannot be downgraded)
Mirroring needs to be between instance of the same version, preferably the same service pack too.

i want to do mirroring making 2008 as principal and 2008r2 as mirrored. will that work?

It'll work, partially. It is not a supported config, it's not supposed to be used for anything other than a rolling upgrade and if the mirroring ever fails over you will not be able to fail back.
There's really little use in a HA scenario that you can't fail over to without problems. Rather don't. Principal and mirror should be the same version. Either both 2008 or both 2008 R2.

Thanks, It would be great if you can give me a reference/documents.
What will be the alternative approach for this, T-Replication? if not Backup/Restore.
Thanks

Books Online is your reference.
As for an alternative, the alternatives you've listed have the same problem, once the second server (R2) becomes the active server you cannot in any way fail back.
Either install 2008 on both or install 2008 R2 on both. HA with mixed versions is just asking for all sorts of trouble.
