mirroring question

  • Hi Folks,

just a question about the requirements of a the mirror server.

Do you need the same hardware and Operating system on the principal and mirror server.

In particular if you have RAID 10 on principal do you need RAID 10 on mirror

Can you have win 2003 enterprise on principal and win 2003 standard on mirror.

  • I am about 95% certain that you have to have the same hardware/software running on the servers.

However, it would be a little silly not to. The whole point of mirroring is for it's high availability. The mirror is going to act as your failover incase of a crash or some other issue. So if you use different hardware/software, when you principal crashes, then you will not only have to run into that issue, but then you and your users will take a performance hit.

As for the witness server, it doesn't really matter one lick.

    Hope that helps.

  • Sorry, meant that you don't have to have the same hardware/software. 😀

    Fraggle

  • They Do Not have to be similar.

Mirroring is totally independent of the physical setup.

The load on the mirror is only about 20% or less as the load on the prod server, so if you really only want a minimal failsafe, that is ok with a lesser server.

If you have two servers, and similar config, then balance out the databases, so each one is running some prod databases and some passive mirror db.

Mirroring is really nice (especially for upgrades) so even if you can only come up with a lesser machine to take the passive mirror - I'd recommend that you do it.

Think of it this way, if the db fails over, slow is better than totally off-line.

The more you are prepared, the less you need it.
