I was going through an article on database mirroring. The author says "Select the default port and the endpoint name chosen by the SQL server management studio and click Next. If you are choosing some other port, then make sure that port is open and available. "
Can I choose any port # between 1024 and 5000? Also, how do I make sure the port is open?

Check with your Network Operations personnel. They should be able to tell what port (or ports) you may use.
That's what I did when I setup database mirroring. Plus, this let them document it for their records as well.
