Mirroring DBs- different Sql Servers

  • I would like to create mirror DB on server that is different from one where principal DB resides. In our case Principal server is 64 bit Enterprise edition, Mirror one- 32 bit Standard edition. As far as 64 vs 32 bit concerned this should not be an issue in accordance with BOL “… a database mirroring session can combine server instances that run in a 32-bit environment and server instances that run in a 64-bit environment”. At the same time BOL requires “two partners, that is the principal server and mirror server, are running the same edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2005”. Therefore my question is probably a bit naïve 🙂 one- does anybody have experience with mirroring DBs in this case (Enterprise-Standard pair) or it’s really impossible as BOL points? Thanks, Yuri

  • I can confirm that we have mirrored from a 64 bit to a 32 bit platform, although the 64 bit machine was running 32 bit SQL server. I wouldn't think mirroring would be a problem from enterprise to standard, but I could be wrong. Give it a shot if you can and post the results.

  • Thanks Adam-

I just tryed and found that you can not use pair Enterpise-Standard Sql servers for mirroring.:w00t:

  • thanks for the folloup - good info. kind of surprising you cannot do that.

  • Actually BOL mentioned about it- both servers should have same Editions- both Enterprise or both Standard. But I decided to check myself- it's true. I need to install Enterprise Edition on Mirror Sql server.
