we have an old Cognos installation and thinking about going to SQL Analysis services. I think it's Cognos version 7, but not sure. it's from the 2005 or so timeframe. it's running on Windows 2000 with a SQL 2000 backend and getting to the point where there is too much data for it to handle. Only about 1TB of data on there.
is it possible to migrate the cubes to SQL 2005/2008/R2? how hard would it be?
and does anyone know of any major feature differences? To buy a new version of Cognos would cost $70,000 or so just for the software compared to $15000 for SQL 2008 R2 Ent Edition. and it looks like if you run Cognos on Windows it won't take advantage of x64 either

There's no migration tool (that I know of) but doing this manually shouldn't be too taxing, depending of course on what features you used in the Cognos cube/s. Some of the ways/names for achieving like functionality are different so you'll need to come up to speed on these.
