Migrating analysis services repository

  • Hi all,

I need to migrate the entire SQL Server + Analysis Server to a new box. I have cubes and dimensions defined on the Analysis Server. How do you usually move it to a new server? Is it just migrate the repository *.mdb file to the new box and then import it from Analysis Manager?

    Thanks,

  • You have a few options.  You do need to move/copy the Repository to the new machine.  I would install the s/w and then apply all service packs that bring it up to the same SP level as your current install before doing anything else.  Then copy the repository from the old server to the new.  If you don't want to reprocess the cubes, then you can copy the contents of the data directory to the new server also but make sure that the data directory is set correctly within the server.

Alternatively, you could install the new server, service pack it as described, then use copy|paste in Analysis Manager to move the entire catalogs (still requires dimension/cube process though i think).  Alternatively, archive all of your catalogs and then restore them to the new server (you can do both archive & restore through either Analysis Manager or using msmdarch.exe).

You should consider migrating your repository to MSSQL too, if for no reason other than to perform SQL backups on it in case of catastrophic failure.

    Steve.
