Migrate Sql 2000 Enterprice SP3 To SQL 2008 Std, Side By Side

    Hi

    I am starting "the" upgrade and have found out that the server is only on SP3. I have only one migrationwindow 🙁 as it looks now.

    I am only using databases and DTS.

    I know the best practice says SP4, but has anyone succeeded migrating on SP3?

    My first thought is Backup/restore, I believe that that is the best solution.

    I will run the upgrade wizard for SQL 2008 next week. I have read in a couple of threads that you should also run the upgrade wizard for 2005 as well, is that necessary?

    I will also dig in the the massive dokumentation when I get my hands on the server.

    Does anyone have any information/suggestions what not to do or do :-).

    My main issue right now is, do I need SP4 first..

    Did you ever get an answer to this?

    I am in a similar postion. We have a SQL2000 installation to SP3a.

    I want to do a side-by-side upgraded to SQL2008R2.

    I can't see why I should I have to upgrade to SP4 before doing this. I know it works from SP3a but are there any caveats? I suspect the SP3a to SP4 upgrade makes little difference to the databases - just the software, but cannot find anything conclusive to confirm.

    Any advice that you have would be appreciated.

    Guys, you should go ahead and perform a trial upgrade so you know where you stand.

    If it were me, I'd try restoring a backup to the newer version and run some tests. You might even try restoring to a 2005 edition first.

    I think I might have answered my own question.

    Neither of the following two Microsoft articles:-

    make any reference to Service Pack level - suggesting to me that SP4 is NOT a requirement for upgrading a database from SQL2000 to SQL2008R2.

    Hi

    I did not get into trouble, it went very smood. I did a backup/restore and changed all the compability levels and started monitoring the performance to find the bottlenecks.

    I didn't find any function that I used that was dependent on SP4.
