Migrate dbs from SQL 2005 to SQL Server 2008 R2

    What is the optimal way of migrating around 500 huge databases?

    I am opting for moving the hard drives of 2005 server and hook to the new server (2008) and then attach all the databases. Is there some script out there that does dettach all databases and attach them?

    I prefer to take more caution. I can see the reason for wanting to do it that way, but I prefer to take a full backup and restore that backup - especially with a parallel server upgrade as you describe.

    If there is a failure during the upgrade then you need to have an option to rollback.
