thanks for all your valuable replies
what about application level
I have read sql server 2005 backward comparability online document
some features in sql server 2000 are deprecated in sql server 2005/2008. I might need to ensure that the application that uses sql server 2000 must be able to work well with sql server 2005/2008
Is it possible that we can avoid changes in application level. I could not find any information about changes in application level

Why is it that companies never want to spend money on the backbone of the company. How long do you think a company would survive with no data? Ask them that.Companies always seem to skimp on Servers and phones. Something that every company needs to survive. But they always want some miracle to happen when they give you junk hardware to work with.

My company told me that in order to survive in the world of IT, cost effective is very important. No choice I have to make do with the resources
