HI All,
I have just noticed that our Production server , Staging server and Dev Servers are running different version
PRODUCTION:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3068.00 (Intel X86)
Feb 26 2008 18:15:01
Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation
Standard Edition on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)
STAGING:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1406.00 (Intel X86)
Mar 3 2007 18:40:02
Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation
Enterprise Edition on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)
DEV:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1406.00 (Intel X86)
Mar 3 2007 18:40:02
Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation
Enterprise Edition on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 1)
Is there any chance of this creating problems for us?
Thanks
Chris

I have to say it's pretty uncommon to have Standard Edition on Production and Enterprise Edition on Development/Staging.
Here is the deal... you have more SQL Server features available on Development/Staging than you have on Production, theoretically this can put yourself in a situation where something that "works" on Development does not work on Production.
On the other hand there is the licensing issue, you are paying much more money for Development/Staging than you are paying for Production 😉

Thanks Paul,
Do you have an example of thing that would work on the other servers and not PRODUCTION?
This way I can go to boss and try and explain this to him.
Thanks

In regards to your question you may want to check this document... http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/enterprise/comparison.mspx
...probably your boss couldn't care less about all the technical stuff BUT... he/she may care about money!... your company is paying expensive Enterprise Edition licenses for both Development and Staging... if they do not need Enterprise features you can downgrade both Develpment and Staging and save a buck or two 😎 it would look nice in your annual evaluation, isn't it?

Thanks Paul,
This will be a good read for the boss.
I'm hoping to get exams that I could let the team know about in case things start falling over on live before there being more functionality on the other two servers
