metrics

  • Is there a good performance metric to build a sql server 2016 instance(s) that has no past history, basically a new build that could calulate a VM for CPU and memory.

  • No. Everything it really workload dependent. Early on I'd build a 2x4 (2 cores, 4GB) for a new SQL VM, and then add resources if needed. These days I'd likely at least go 2x16 to start (or 4x16).

Any idea on user count, workload, etc? What's the use?

  • I found out the system was in hyper-v recently and brand new, no user count or anything. For your 2x4, is that just an example calculation or you came by this from just your years of experience. I will use that as my standard calculation going forward. The use of this is just for a new application , but trying to find the right standard of calculation to put in for the cpu and memory.
