Hello,
I am looking for some best practices of managing meta data. Right now with one of our client the meta data is stored in multiple places like spread sheets, in some ETL tools, word docs.
I am looking for good way to centralize this meta data , which would be easy for business analysts, ETL developers to query and modify.
Any help in this regard is welcome.

I tried to do the meta data long time ago. It is basically a full time job. Everytime something changes, you have to change the meta data.
I used to do some meta data work, not all of them, here was the list.
Document all the source data, where they came from, the format of each field, the possible values of each field.
Document the dimension tables and fact tables - each field.
Document which source data field went to which table in the data warehouse. Is there any translation from the source data to data warehouse data? Is there a default value if the source data did not exist? Any error report produced?
Document each business rule when building the data warehouse.
These are just the basics of the meta data management.
