Merge Rep: VPN vs. FTP

  • I'm a newbie SS dba; our company is rewriting an Access 97 db into sqlserver. The ac97 db did replication via vpn or http://ftp...I'm trying to establish how tricky it will be to get that functionality in SS.

I've read John Welch's account (http://www.pinnaclepublishing.com/SQ/SQMag.nsf/0/926014008431827585256981006CE44D) of a FTP solution

My question is, is there a strong preference either way?

I work for a medium-small company (150 people) in the Australian countryside; bandwidth is enough of an issue that live remote site access to the central server is a few years away yet - hence the need for replication.

    Thanks for reading!

  • Think I'd vote for the VPN. If you have a remote site probably makes sense to have that tunnel open anyway (unless it's a private link maybe). Even with money to do it, there is something to be said for replication - not out of business if the link drops - and I promise, the link will drop!

  • Thanks Andy

I'm having a go at the FTP replication anyway...

BUT I'm getting stuck with my connection to the distributor.

    My REPLMERG settings are:

    -Publisher [blahVIC02]

    -PublisherDB [Rocks]

    -Publication [FTPTEST01]

    -PublisherLogin sa

    -PublisherPassword blahblah

    -Subscriber [blahVICWS33]

    -SubscriberDB [FTPtest02]

    -SubscriptionType 2

    -SubscriberSecurityMode 0

    -SubscriberLogin sa

    -SubscriberEncryptedPassword [????????????????????????????????]

    -Distributor blahVIC02

    -DistributorNetwork DBNETLIB

    -DistributorLogin sa

    -DistributorPassword blahblah

    -FTPAddress 597.17.12.2

    -FtpUserName anonymous

    -FtpPassword cals@local

    -Distributoraddress 876.198.13.5

I can ftp to the snapshot directory alright, but when I try & run the agent it bombs out trying to connect to the distributor. (ERROR : Cannot connect, SQL server does not exist or access denied)

I am behind a hardware firewall, but not a proxy server.

The ftpaddress is the firewall IP, but the distributor address is the internal network IP.

Has anyone got this working or know of some more dox to get it working? !

    Thanks in advance

    Cals
