Merge error in SP3 with Binary Sort

  • If there is anyone with a little time on their hands I think I'm uncovering a bug in SP3, but have a hard time believing something like this wouldn't have been caught. I'd thought I would throw this out here before I put in the call to MS.

I recently upgraded to SP3 from SP2 and tried creating a publication using a script I know worked in SP2 on the same server. I receive an error, but the error message text is missing from sysmessages. I did some digging and find that it is looking for a role that merge replication now "automatically" creates in the publication database. Viewing the sp3 release notes points me to a procedure that will create this missing role should it ever be accidently dropped.

Great! it worked, but now I receive another error, this time when trying to add the snapshot job. I figure there is something I'm new in SP3 that I'm missing so I create a NEW Database, a NEW Table, and try to use the EM wizard to create the publication so I can view the script. Back to the same (missing) error message that is caused by the missing database role.

I figure the servicepack must not have applied right, but all of the create dates on the stored procs in question are equal to the date/time I applied the pack. I now choose to Install a New Instance on a new machine, apply sp3, and again use the EM Wizard to create a merge publication. Same error about the db role.

That's where I'm at...my installation is custom using the Latin1_General character set and Binary Sort Order. As I was about to post, I went to that same server where I have a instance installed with the default sort order/char set and it does work. So it must be related to the sort order...

  • Found out from Microsoft that this is a known issue with several sort-orders. Sounds like they will have a patch this week.

If anyone is running into this problem. Microsoft has released a patch as hotfix ..762
