Memorial Day

  • titled - "Anything that is NOT about SQL"....

Though I must confess Frank - that after reading something like this it is sooooooooo nice to get back to SQL and be in command of SELECTS - GROUP BY - ORDER BY...

at least in the SQL world, we're in control! <;-)

**ASCII stupid question, get a stupid ANSI !!!**

  • sushila, Olivier,

Yes, even though we may disagree, thank goodness we can still shake hands and be united in our humanity ... and our love of SQL Server! 🙂

    Best regards,

    SteveR

P.S. - I appreciate both of your opinions.

  • ... "This is the place for discussions that are generally off topic but probably of interest to SQL professionals anyway:-)"

The probability of this being interesting for the majority of members here is not very high, I'd say.

  • Hi Frank,

    I've missed you!

In all fairness, the thread was titled "Memorial Day."  It must of caught your interest 'cause you have posted here.

A wise man once said, "if you don't like it, leave it".

  • Steve (Jones ie)...you should think of adding a flag maybe, to some of your topics to indicate any (potential) inflammatory content...

I know you had no idea (at least I don't think you did) that something like "Memorial Day" would set off any/some sparks...that being said I think almost any/every topic is a potential red rag to a bull...maybe you should just flag all of them and have each flag colored differently for different levels of heat (like a Thai menu !!!)

    <;-)

  • Dale, you know where to find me.

Yes and no, it did catch my interest, because I enjoy Steve's editorial each day anew. And no, because I'm always tempted to kick him, when he writes something about, let's call it, political themes in general.

  • I'll take the kicks

I knew this one would get some action, but I did want to remember our veterans. Everyone should remember their own veterans. Whether you agree with the cause or not, the people on the ground are those that were ordered to got there. They did their duty and in some cases died, whether they agreed or not.

  • Steve,

I am from Germany. Not that I ever intend to do so as I simply don't care about it, but do you know or can you imagine what what will happen to me, when I publicly "remember our veterans"? A witchhunt sounds more tempting to me.

War is good for absolutely nothing but the defence industry. But it seems to lie somewhere within the human nature. There is an worth reading book by Ulrich Horstmann titled "Das Untier". I don't know if it is available in English, but if so, it would have a title like "The beast" or "The beast within". Really interesting insights into the human history.

    That's a real shame, Frank.

  • No, not really. Considering all the sh*t Germans did some 60 years ago, it really isn't.

  • At least they've learnt from their mistakes and reformed....which's more than I can say for many other countries (not going to name any names here...)

**ASCII stupid question, get a stupid ANSI !!!**

  • Maybe, maybe not. Tendencies are still here. Just like in almost any other country, too. But that's politically incorrect to say.

  • ...and don't forget, that is not the only War to remember in Germany's history.  "They did their duty and in some cases died, whether they agreed or not."  I have a friend in Germany and I know what you are saying.  He let me know how sensitive it was to say certain things.  However, contrary to belief, that is not always what we remember about Germany.  Also, every country has to think they were on the wrong side at one time or another in history.  "At least they've learnt from their mistakes and reformed....which's more than I can say for many other countries..."

  • Surely not, but that one changed the whole world for a long time and brought the most pain to mankind so far...

    I'll stop now.

You've got me again more involved in such a thread than I intended to, Dale.

  • Frank - I'll say this one last thing & STOP....

"Most pain to mankind"...is just not true...Stalin was pure evil and caused more deaths (didn't just target any specific groups either like a lot of dictators did)....

The bottom line...the sins of the fathers SHOULD NOT be visited upon the children....
