Hi,
I have an Azure VM built from template that runs SQL Server 2016 Standard SP1 CU4 (13.0.4446) I also want to install an number of named instances on the same server. When running from the binaries on the VM, it installs SQL at 13.0.4435 oddly - I guess the template makes sure it adds extra CU's.
However my question is to do with Meltdown/Spectre patches. I have read the patch (or one of them) details for Meltdown/Spectre here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=56406 and once applied this takes the SQL Server version to 13.0.4210.6 - does that mean I am already covered for these patches? The one in that link was released on 3rd Jan 2018, but the earlier patches are at a higher version number. Confusing or am I missing something?

Most probably you won't be able to install that patch, you should consider installing this patch instead - https://support.microsoft.com/en-nz/help/4058561/description-of-the-security-update-for-sql-2016-cu7-sp1-january-9-2018
It will upgrade your SQL Server to the version 13.0.4464.4.

Thanks Evgeny, that seems like the common sense approach. 😎

Master guidance here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4073225/guidance-for-sql-server
I'd concur with Evgeny, go with CU 7
