Measuring server load?

  • Hello I am new to posting in this forum

I am SQL server developer and most of my expereince is on the development side. However, there's no DBA at my company and we need some help with some of the DBA activities.

Currently we have two sql server 2000 production servers, we have about 20 databases or so. I look after about 5 or 6 of those databases.

Our IT manager wanted to implement HA on those server, she also wanted to know what spec we should get for the hardware to implement HA.

The question I have, is there any ways or tools to do stress or performance tests on the server to determine a new suitable hardware specification?

My manger is also keen to combine both server on one server to if possible but we not sure if the new server would be able to cope with both server databases.

What are the main consideration to take into account when specificing out new server ? any helpful hints?

we are charity so our resources are limited.

For HA solution we still would be using sql server 2000, as we are not migrating to the newer version of SQL server yet.

Can someone please tells us if they have done something similar in the past.

    Many thanks

  • Any suggestions any one??

  • To test the performance of existing hardware you can make use of sqliostress utility.
