MCTS: SQL Server 2005

  • I am a c++/c# developer who wishes to gain the MCTS: SQL Server 2005 certification. I would like to do it with self-study and don't know where to begin. Can anyone provide some direction? Thank you.

  • If you go through the items covered at http://www.microsoft.com/learning and feel comfortable with it, you should be OK. Measureup.com has an online test simulator that is pretty good. As far as self-study, books online is your best friend. Go through everything that MS has listed as covered in the test, work with it, review the books online info, and your chances are good. I didn't find this to be terribly difficult, although there were some needlessly specific questions. The professional level exams (for the DBA or Developer certs) are much better.

  • Thanks and if I might, one final question? I'm unsure as to which certification to pursue. You mention 'DBA or Developer certs' and I'm unclear as to what this means. Since I'm primarily a developer wanting to become much better with SQL Server 2005, could you recommend a better certification for me than MCTS: SQL Server 2005? Any consideration given me on this will be acted upon. Thanks again...

  • Ah. With 2005 they've changed the certification paths. MCTS is the base technology test for any additional certifications. If you wanted to get the profession database developer certification, there's 2 additional tests you must take. Again, on the learning site at MS they have those certification paths defined. The MCTS certification level is more of a base technology certification, while the professional ones are focused more on job functions and practical scenarios you might deal with on a day to day basis.

Hope that helps -- good luck!

  • James, It helps a great deal. Thank you!

  • Google for "Brain Dump" as material to use for a before test cram session, always helps me keep the "senarios" in mind when they occur in the tests.

Now If I was just smart enough to be able to remember and record the tests as it seems some folks can...

  • Thanks Andy for being helpful.
